Like all Sandrin knives, the Torino has a tungsten carbide blade, which, with its unusually high hardness of 71 HRC, far surpasses any steel in terms of abrasion resistance and cutting performance. The new coarse blade finish (“meteorite pattern”) gives the Torino, designed as a utility knife, a striking “rough” appearance. The countless marks on the blade from different directions are achieved by grinding with fine diamonds.

The Torino is Sandrin's first one-handed knife. Opening pins attached to both sides of the blade serve as an opening aid. The new recoil lock allows the opened knife blade to be closed smoothly with just one hand.

For a long time, the use of tungsten carbide for utility knife blades was considered impossible. Due to its extremely high degree of hardness and the associated increased susceptibility to breakage, this miracle material was unattractive to the knife industry in its previous form.

However, Alessandro Colombatto, owner of Turmond S.p.A based in Turin, Italy, succeeded in finding an ideal composition for precisely this purpose. With a still incredible hardness of “only” 71 HRC, Sandrin Knives knife blades are both flexible and considerably more break-resistant than ceramic blades.

This achieves a cutting performance that is far superior to any known classic or modern steel. The manufacturer states that the cutting edge remains sharp 20 times longer than the best premium powder steel blades (see also comparison list). And although the blades do not contain any chromium, Sandrin Knives are just as rust-resistant as stainless steel knives.
